Pre-Meeting Client Discovery for IFAs and Pension Advisers
Turning Insight Into Trust
See your client’s own ranked priorities before the first meeting.
KYP ranks what a client wants from their long-term money, how they want to be guided, and who they expect to look after it, before you sit down together.
- A detailed pre-meeting priorities report emailed to you as a PDF when your client finishes
- No names, no addresses, no financial data — just your own reference code
- A short exercise your client completes on their phone or computer
For IFAs and pension advisers, the first meeting is often where a client finds out what they actually think. They arrive with a pot, a pension or a retirement date, and little sense of which of their own priorities comes first. Working that out live, in the room, takes time you meant to spend advising. KYP moves that client discovery work to before the meeting.
Two clients with the same pot can want very different things.
One wants certainty that there will be enough. Another wants to enjoy the money while they can. A third wants to leave something behind, and a fourth mainly wants it to be simple. The numbers can look identical on paper. The conversation you need to have with each of them is not.
| Standard discovery meeting | KYP-prepared meeting |
|---|---|
| Early discovery spent working out what the money is for | Straight into a conversation shaped around what they said matters most |
| You find out partway through that they wanted more involvement, or less | You know before you start whether they want reassurance, to delegate, to be consulted, or to scrutinise |
| Unspoken assumptions about who looks after what | A clear view of whether they expect you, their provider or themselves to look after it |
| Your notes on their preferences are your best guess | A documented record of the choices they made during the exercise |
How pre-meeting client discovery works
- Send the link, with your own reference. Add your CRM or diary reference to the link — no client details, no setup, no KYP account for your client to create.
- Client ranks their priorities. A short exercise of head-to-head choices on their phone or computer, in three stages.
- Report lands in your inbox. A PDF emailed to you, referenced by the code you set.

What the Client Priority Report covers
Three stages, each ranking four statements.
- Financial priorities. What your client wants their long-term money to do for them: knowing there will be enough, enjoying it while they can, leaving something behind, or keeping things simple.
- Working with your adviser. How they want to be guided: reassurance and regular updates, handing it over to the expert, being involved in each decision, or seeing the options and reasoning for themselves.
- Who looks after it. Who they expect to take responsibility: their adviser, the company holding their money, themselves, or they have yet to settle it.
The report shows how your client ranked the statements in each stage. It describes what they chose. It does not assess suitability and it is not advice.

Consumer Duty evidence: a record made before advice is given
A completed KYP session is a timestamped record that your client set out their own priorities before any advice was given. It can sit in your file as one piece of Consumer Duty evidence alongside your own notes.
KYP does not assess needs, determine suitability or recommend anything, and it does not make a firm compliant. The advice, and the responsibility for it, remain entirely yours.
